Central receives Humanities Iowa grant for Writers Reading

PELLA — Central College received a $7,000 grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the Geisler Library Writers Reading Spring 2011 series. The proposal was deemed “exemplary” for its programming and the collaboration between Central College, the Pella Public Library and the Friends of Central Arts.

Highlighting the spring series are Bob Leonard, creative writer and special news editor for KNIA/KRLS radio, Thursday, Jan. 27, in Cox-Snow Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.; essayist John D’Agata, Thursday, Feb. 3, in Geisler Library Reading Room at 7:30 p.m.; writer Alexandra Fuller, Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Cox-Snow Recital Hall; and author Terry Tempest Williams, Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Geisler Library Reading Room. All events are free and open to the public.

Humanities Iowa is a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, whose mission is to enhance the civic life, culture and identity of Iowans. Humanities Iowa is particularly interested in supporting projects that stimulate meaningful community dialogue, attract diverse audiences, are participatory and engaging, and invite discovery of the humanities in interesting and exciting ways.

Geisler Library Writers Reading series was established in 1987 to promote an appreciation of books and their authors and features locally, nationally and internationally known writers reading and discussing their works. In cooperation with the Central College Bookstore, copies of authors’ works are made available for purchase.
