Central College participates in domestic violence prevention

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Central College’s Beta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and the Intercultural Life office will host Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.

The event begins at the Tulip Tower on Pella’s main square, where BKE members will lead a one-mile walk in high-heeled shoes. The walk route will follow Broadway Street before passing through campus and finishing behind Central’s H.S. Kuyper Field House.

Central students, employees, alumni and the general public are invited to participate. High-heeled shoes will be available, or participants can bring walking shoes.

“It’s important for everyone in our community to know that we all have a role to play in ending all forms of violence, in order to create and sustain a safer and healthier place for us all to learn and grow,” said Brandyn Woodard, director of intercultural life.

Following the walk, the Crisis Intervention Center will be available to educate participants on domestic violence. Food and refreshments will also be available. BKE and Intercultural Life will accept donations benefiting the Crisis Intervention Center.

Beta Kappa Epsilon has also collected donations from local businesses.

‘“It is important to develop awareness because domestic violence is a behind-the-scenes problem,” said BKE president Ben Chestnut. “We want to highlight that this is an issue and let victims know our community is here to support them.”

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is sponsored annually by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an organization aimed at preventing domestic violence against women and children.
