Author Ralph Savarese at Writers Reading

The Writers Reading series welcomes author Ralph Savarese as the first featured presenter of the spring semester.  He will share his creative nonfiction and poetry on Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Geisler Library Reading Room.

Savarese is the author of “Reasonable People: A Memoir of Autism and Adoption.” The book features Savarese’s son DJ, a non-speaking and badly-abused autistic child whom the author and his wife adopted at age six. The memoir garnered Savarese and his family national attention. It was twice featured on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” as well as ABC’s “Nightly News with Charles Gibson” and NPR’s “The Diane Rehm Show.”

In addition to his book, Savarese’s other works have been widely published. He has co-edited three collections: “Autism and the Concept of Neurodiversity,” “The Lyric Body” and “Papa, PhD: Essays on Fatherhood by Men in the Academy.” His creative work has appeared in Southwest Review, American Poetry Review, New England Review and the LA Times, among other publications.

Savarese is assistant professor of English at Grinnell College, where he teaches American literature, creative writing and disability studies.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Natalie Hutchinson, library director, at 641-628-5220 or hutchinsonn@central.edu.
