The Central RED Society welcomes Mark Barloon, senior lecturer of history at Central College, Monday, Nov. 18. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. with the program at 6 p.m. in the Boat, Moore and Weller Rooms, Maytag Student Center. The cost is $20.
Barloon will dive deep into the history of “Saipan: D-Day in the Pacific.” On June 15, 1944, nine days after the Allied landings in the Normandy region of France, U.S. Marines stormed the beaches of the strategically significant Japanese island of Saipan.
Barloon was born in northeast Iowa and raised on a family-owned hog farm. After high school, he earned a B.S. from Iowa State University, M.S. from University of Iowa and his Ph.D. at University of North Texas. He spent several years working as an intelligence officer. He returned to Iowa and has been teaching at Central for more than 20 years.
Register by Monday, Nov. 11, at Central.edu/alumni/events. For more information contact Mary Benedict, director of engagement, at benedictm@central.edu or by phone at 641-628-7641.
