Central College’s Central RED Society will present “Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine and Camp Courageous” with Charlie Becker and his son, Chad Becker, M.D., Tuesday, Nov. 15. The Central RED luncheon program will be at 11:30 a.m. in Dave and Ardie Sutphen Common Room in Central’s Graham Annex. The presentation begins at noon. The lunch cost is $10.
Thinking of others is not new to the Becker family; Charlie Becker is the CEO of Camp Courageous, a camp for individuals with special needs. Camp Courageous was established in 1972 and Becker has served the camp for 43 years.
The Beckers will share about their travels to the border of Poland and Ukraine in March to aid the humanitarian crisis, what they saw and why they do what they do. During their travels to the Ukrainian border, they took 200 pounds of medical supplies along with an additional 1,000 pounds of food and other supplies. The Beckers’ work on the border was driven by their passion for helping others.
Charlie attended the University of Iowa, leading him to teach economics and government at Lee High School in Donnellson, Iowa. Chad went to medical school and is now an emergency medicine specialist at UnityPoint Hospitals in Des Moines and Grinnell. The two continue to use their skills to help individuals around the world.
