THIS EVENT IS CANCELED

Kathy Korcheck, professor of Spanish at Central College, will present “From Empathy to Engagement: Mobilizing Public Space in Buenos Aires in #Niunamenos and Beyond” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Boat-Moore rooms of Maytag Student Center.

The presentation is the fifth and final in Central’s 2019-20 Faculty Lecture Series with a focus on civic engagement. It is free and open to the public.

According to the United Nations, approximately 12 women a day are murdered in Latin America. #Niunamenos is an evolving social movement in Argentina that started in 2015 as a collective protest against femicide. Since then it has expanded its scope to address reproductive rights, social and economic inequality and LGBTQ issues as well.

Korcheck’s presentation explores #Niunamenos as a grassroots feminist movement grounded in women’s longstanding role in mobilizing public space as motivating social transformation in Argentina. She will examine how the strategic use of the urban landscape and its past and present symbology compels city dwellers and visitors to move from empathy to engagement throughout Argentina.

Korcheck is an expert in Spanish cultural studies, memory studies and visual literacy and culture. She has taught at Central since 2007.
