Central RED Society will present a behind-the-scenes tour of the Des Moines Civic Center and Hoyt Sherman Place on Thursday, May 23. The bus will leave Pella, Iowa, at 9 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Cost is $45 and includes a box lunch, admission fees and transportation. Bus seating is limited to 56.
The tour will start at the Des Moines Civic Center, Iowa’s premier entertainment venue recognized nationally for outstanding programming and ticket sales. While at the center, participants will enjoy a program that shares insights about Broadway shows from Broadway insiders and about the center’s family and education programs. A backstage tour will follow.
The tour will proceed to Hoyt Sherman Place, one of Des Moines’ most significant entertainment, banquet and meeting facilities. Nestled on the eastern edge of historic Sherman Hills District, Hoyt Sherman Place was built in 1877 by prominent pioneer businessman Hoyt Sherman. The elegant family home has expanded over the years to include an impressive art gallery and historic theatre. Tour participants will eat a box lunch in the art gallery while learning about the building’s history. A tour of the facility will follow.
Participants must be a member of the Central RED (“Ready to Engage and Discover”) Society to attend. A Central RED membership costs $25 per year. To become a member, contact Mary Benedict at benedictm@central.edu or 641-628-7641. No affiliation with Central is required to join.
