As you are all aware, we are expecting extremely cold temperatures beginning this afternoon and extending until Thursday morning. The risks associated with this weather pattern are serious and the safety of every member of our community is always our highest priority. Accordingly, I am announcing changes in our schedule of activities, as well as limited access to facilities on our campus over the next two days.
Beginning at 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 29, all campus classes and activities are canceled and administrative offices closed. We will resume regular hours beginning Thursday, Jan. 31. Also beginning at 6 p.m. today, all academic and athletic facilities, and most administrative buildings will be closed and secured until regular hours on Thursday.
Conference rules govern our sporting event schedules. Central’s women’s and men’s basketball games on Wednesday evening against Nebraska Wesleyan University will be played as scheduled. The wrestling team will compete this evening at William Penn University as scheduled. Appropriate precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of these student-athletes and coaches.

A shuttle service will be available from 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Wednesday to shuttle students to Central Market and the Maytag Student Center. Stops will be made at Scholte/Graham on Broadway, Maytag, Central Market, the Collegiate Center and McKee Hall. Outside these hours, students may contact campus safety for transportation assistance within the campus as usual.
Though the disruption to our normal campus activities will be inconvenient for many, we ask for your patience as we work together to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. We extend our special thanks to members of our staff who will be called upon to support these efforts in our dining services, facilities and student development operations. You have our deepest thanks.
Extreme Cold Safety Tips
The National Weather Service has predicted weather conditions that can be dangerous for this week. Please stay safe and exercise caution if you venture outside this week.
- Minimize travel.
- Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
- If you do go out, dress appropriately for the cold weather.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
- Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.
- Keep your cell phone charged and with you if you choose to venture out.
- Let someone know where you are going and your intended route.
- Travel with someone, if you can.
- If you see someone who appears to be in trouble or at risk due to the cold conditions, please contact Central’s Information Desk at 641-628-9000 or dial 911.
- Student Safety continues to provide escorts on campus for those with mobility challenges.
