Central to host Jessica Schuring for Faculty Lecture Series

Central College will continue the fall 2017 Faculty Lecture Series with a presentation by Jessica Schuring ‘04, associate professor of economics. Her lecture, “Water’s Paradox: The Low Cost of a Valuable Resource,” takes place Monday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Boat and Moore rooms of Maytag Student Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Schuring, whose areas of expertise include environmental and developmental economics, will delve into the economics of the water. Experts note that if the price of water correlated to how heavily it is used, it would cost much more than it actually does. Schuring will further explore this concept.

Her lecture is one of various ways Central has focused on the topic of global water sustainability. First-year students studied a common read, “Memory of Water,” which focused on the looming danger of losing access to water. The college also welcomed ecologist and water conservationist Cornelia F. Mutel to speak at its convocation ceremony at the beginning of September.

Schuring’s lecture is the second in the Faculty Lecture Series, with the third taking place Monday, Nov. 27.
