Central College hosts Jennifer Harvey for a racial equality workshop Sept. 20 as part of the college’s Learning for Justice Series. Harvey, professor of religion at Drake University, will present “Charting Shifting Water: Race (and Whiteness) in the College Environment” at 7 p.m. in Maytag Student Center. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Jennifer Harvey’s teaching, writing and public speaking focus on encounters of religion and ethics with race, gender, spirituality, justice and other social issues. She is also an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches USA and author of “Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing for Racial Reconciliation” and “Whiteness and Morality: Pursuing Racial Justice Through Reparations and Sovereignty.”

Assistant dean of students T. Todd Masman said the college invited Harvey because of student leaders’ ongoing interest in racial equality and its relationship to Central’s definition of and commitment to sustainability — meeting needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. According to Central’s definition, this goal includes social justice, economic prosperity and environmental integrity. Harvey’s workshop is sponsored by student development and sustainability education at Central.
