Central to host 2015 Geisler Penquite Foundation Speakers

Central College will host the 2015 Geisler Penquite Foundation Speakers, featuring sessions focused on education. Two speakers will visit campus in 2015, and all sessions are free and open to the public.

Jan Hoegh, associate vice president of Marzano Research, will lead two sessions Feb. 11. Rick Wormeli, one of the first Nationally Board Certified teachers in America, will lead two sessions Sept. 23. The sessions are funded by a donation through the Geisler-Penquite Educational Excellence Fund. For more information and to register, visit http://departments.central.edu/education.

Hoegh has been a classroom teacher, building-level leader, professional development specialist, assistant high school principal and curriculum coordinator. The following workshops will take place Feb. 11.

 

  • Jan Hoegh: Becoming a Reflective Teacher, 10 a.m. – noon Feb. 11

The workshop will focus on self-evaluation and self-reflection practices. Participants will explore a range of instructional skills, assess strengths and weaknesses, set goals and design a personal growth plan.

  • Jan Hoegh: Creating a Highly Engaged Classroom, 2 – 4 p.m. Feb. 11

Participants will learn how to create a lively, dynamic classroom in which students are excited to learn and have the drive to keep exploring until they succeed.

 

Rick Wormeli has 33 years of experience teaching math, science, English, physical education, health and history and coaching teachers and principals. He is a columnist for “Middle Ground” magazine and a frequent contributor to ASCD’s “Education Leadership” magazine. He is author of the award-winning book, “Meet Me in the Middle,” as well as other books in the field of education. Wormeli’s sessions will take place Sept. 23.

 

  • Rick Wormeli: Standards-Based Grading: Myth-busting, Ethics and Practicality, 9 -11:30 a.m. Sept. 23

This session presents the essential elements of standards-based grading, including its merits, potential pitfalls and candid responses to the most common concerns regarding its use.

  • Rick Wormeli: Cultivating Resilience and ‘Stick-to-itiveness’ in Students, 1 – 3:30 p.m. Sept. 23

The session focuses on how to help students find the reserves to stick with projects and tasks.
