The Writers Reading series at Central College welcomes Clint McCown, creative nonfiction writer and poet, as the final featured presenter of the spring semester. McCown will read from his work April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Geisler Library.
McCown has written four novels and three volumes of poetry. His most recent work, “Haints,” is a historical novel about the aftermath of a tornado that uncovers a suspicious death.
Born in Tennessee, McCown spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Ala., in the 1960s. During his long career, McCown has worked as a screenwriter for Warner Bros., as a creative consultant for HBO television and as an actor for the National Shakespeare Company. He is the only writer to have won the American Fiction Prize twice, and he has received three nominations for the Pulitzer Prize.
As a journalist, McCown received the Associated Press Award for Documentary Excellence for his investigations of organized crime and political corruption. Other awards include an Academy of American Poets Prize, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great Writers designation, the Society of Midland Authors Award and a Distinction in Literature citation from the Wisconsin Library Association.
McCown teaches creative writing program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
