A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers perform in Des Moines

February 3, 2012

The Central College A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers will be featured as guest choirs in the Choral Evensong at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Des Moines Feb. 12 at 4 p.m.

Under the direction of Mark Babcock, associate professor of music, the A Cappella Choir will perform five songs and the Chamber Singers will perform one. The A Cappella Choir’s selections include E. Fred Morris’s “The Lord Bless You,” and Kenneth Lowenberg’s arrangement of “O Praise Ye the Lord.” The Chamber Singers will perform “The St. Martin’s Responses” by David Drinkell.

The Choral Evensong is part of the Cathedral Arts schedule, a series of events for the whole community hosted by the Cathedral Church of St. Paul that is designed to encourage spiritual and artistic growth. Central’s choral performance is the sixth of 10 events on the 2011-12 calendar.

“This is our fifth year of singing in this prestigious series of arts events at the cathedral,” said Babcock. “It is a beautiful space for grand, glorious English-style cathedral choral and organ music.”

The A Cappella Choir is a 65-member ensemble, and the Chamber Singers is a select 20-person vocal group consisting of members of the A Cappella Choir. Both choirs have earned reputations for choral excellence and variety in programming and perform regularly on and off campus.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Debbie Abel at 641-628-5236 or abeld@central.edu.
