Shawn Wick, assistant professor of sociology at Central College, has been elected president of the Iowa Sociological Association (ISA) for 2014-2015. Wick was selected by other sociology professors throughout the state, and he will be responsible for hosting the organization’s annual conference.

Central College will host its first Gaard scholar-in-residence, Tommy Vietor, to discuss the importance of global citizenship from Oct. 8-10. Vietor’s 7 p.m. address on Oct. 9 will be open to the public in the Cox-Snow Recital Hall.

Central College will host award-winning author Chitra Divakaruni Sept. 24-26. Divakaruni’s keynote address, “My Amazing Journey,” is open to the public at 11 a.m. on Sept. 25 in Douwstra Auditorium.

Central College will host its first volunteer event of the year Sept. 6 at Lake Red Rock. Students will gather trash, plant trees and collect prairie seed to help the Red Rock Lake Association.

Three Central College alumni—and one honorary alumna—will receive awards on Oct. 4 during Central’s homecoming. The award winners include Jeff Link ’89, Kirk Kolenbrander ’83, Markay Winston ’87 and Marlyn Rietfeld Ebbers, who will be honored for professional achievements and dedication to Central.

Iowa Private College Week (IPCW) will bring hundreds of high school students and parents to visit Central College in the first full week of August.

Central College has been awarded a share of a $600,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education for the next three years. The grant will fund a collaborative project between Central College and Drake University to train high school math teachers from low-income areas.

Central College recently established its first mathematics honor society, Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME), with 12 students and two faculty as charter members.
